IoT AKA Internet of Things is a term that has brought a revolution in the digital world in the recent years. By offering various devices a capability to interact with each other, IoT is taking automation to the next level. Now, the devices can communicate and could even take their decisions on their own without any human interventions. A few examples are smart homes, smart locks, security systems, automated cars etc. There’s no doubt that there are more than millions of connected apps, sites and devices around us, but how can they work efficiently if there isn’t any place to store all the IoT data?   1. Communication: The two most important traits of cloud-based IoT paradigm are data sharing and application. Through IoT the ubiquitous applications are transferred and with cloud the connection is set up that helps in tracking and managing them.
  • Storage: IoT is used in millions of devices and thus there are a large number of information sources which generates non-structured and semi-structured data. And there is only cloud that can effectively handle such an enormous amount of data. This also creates opportunities for data integration, sharing and aggregation with third parties.
  • Processing Power Increases: IoT lacks good processing capabilities and thus, the data extraction gets complex with IoT devices. But, with the use of cloud one can achieve virtual processing capabilities which allow processing data in a simple way. This in return reduces the cost and increases the revenue of the businesses that uses IoT.
  • New Functionalities: IoT is distinguished on the base of protocols, devices and the technologies, thus scalability and interoperability can’t be accomplished easily. With cloud not only these issues are resolved, but more can be achieved like ease of access, ease of use, etc.

  1. Scalability: For a cloud platform scalability is the biggest USP, but designing a system for 100 devices is completely different from designing for a billion. Scalability involves the feature of platform to support more number of devices. It also decreases the complexity of handling the IoT systems. Thus, the system you choose must be able to work comfortably even when you increase the number of connected devices. Currently the situation is that the companies claim to support millions of nodes, but in real the platforms cover less than 500 devices. So, it is necessary for you to do all the research before you finalize the IoT cloud platform for your IoT device.
  • Security: Let’s face it, IoT security is damaged today!! And this makes it even more crucial for you to pick a cloud platform which offers a unique identity based authentication methods. 
  • Bandwidth: Generally, we found IoT cloud platforms running over an underlying platform, like Google cloud or AWS. It means the bandwidth is more of an infrastructure limitation and it won’t be symmetric. Asymmetric bandwidth leads to different speeds of uploads and downloads. So, you need to make sure that your cloud platform provider guarantees similar uplink and downlink speed.
  • System Performance: When more and more devices are connected to the IoT cloud the average time of handling and executing all the events increases. Hence, you should ask your provider about the time lag whenever a new device is connected.
  • Disaster Recovery: A simple mistake by an engineer can affect the internet and you might lose your data. This requires the cloud provider to save the backups on a regular basis.
  • Hybrid Cloud: An IoT cloud platform that can fit precisely into various IT systems offers many benefits, like allowing critical operation by the cloud.
  • Lifetime Solution: For those who are consuming IoT cloud services as an industrial manufacturer, a long term support is essential. If you think that the service you chose doesn’t offer a future-proof architecture, then don’t go for it.
